It is the mission of NPD Rx to provide education, facilitate policy‐change and extend public or charitable services to protect and heal individuals and families negatively affected by "dark-triad" interpersonal dynamics.
Narcissistic traits‐to‐NPD-abuse is a spectrum of increasing harm on others and is one of the three so-called "dark-triad" personality cores. In psychology, the "dark triad" refers to the personality traits of narcissism, machiavellianism and psychopathy. They are called "dark" because of their malevolent qualities. NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) is a permanent personality disorder with a long-term pattern of abnormal behavior characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance, excessive need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. A person with NPD likely spends much time thinking about achieving power or success, or on their appearance. They often take advantage of / deceive those around them.
NPD is not hereditary, is not a disability or brain dysfunction, and cuts across all races, cultures, educational levels and socio‐economic classes. NPD behavior typically begins in early adulthood. In a home, NPD‐abuse is domestic violence, conditioning the victim(s) to serve the needs of the abuser "or else". NPD is most strongly characterized by lack of parental empathy, entitlement and "boundarilessness". A person high on the narcissism scale may not first present as harmful and in fact may present as attractive, charming, pleasing and outgoing. The narcissistic personality can feel Jekyll and Hyde: as Jekyll, charming, authoritative, so that a victim is drawn in, committed and trapped before the unfurling a toxic personality that causes victims disorientation and increasing isolation, often escalating to devastating family violence.
When children are involved, an NPD‐parent will likely readily incorporate a child into the parental‐conflict, forcing the other parent to submit rather than see the child invaded. A parent might stay with an NPD‐abusive parent because of the possibility that a court may not perceive the NPD‐abuse, and so could expose the child to the NPD‐abusive parent without supervision.
The mission of NPD Rx is to consider the full scope of dark triad abuse on the primary victim and dependent children and to develop and offer programs and activism toward meeting those needs.
